What is a Q Grader, and why does it matter?

What is a Q Grader, and why does it matter?

A Q Grader is a cupper certified by the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) to evaluate arabica coffee under an internationally recognized, standardized protocol. It isn't a personal opinion about flavor — it's a repeatable scoring system that lets lots from any origin be compared using the same criteria.

Why this certification exists

Before a shared quality language existed, a buyer and a producer could describe the same coffee in completely different terms. The Q protocol solves that with:

  • A standardized cupping form (the SCA Cupping Form).
  • Sensory calibration across cuppers.
  • Physical grading of the green bean alongside the cup profile.

What changes for a student

Working toward Q Grader isn't only for those seeking formal certification. The sensory calibration process directly improves:

  1. Precision when describing defects and positive attributes.
  2. Consistency across cuppers on the same team.
  3. The ability to justify a purchase price with data, not just intuition.

At the Academy, this calibration work starts long before the formal exam — it's built cup by cup, starting from the earliest cupping modules.
